Job Title:          Graduate Assistant – Residence Life                  
Classification: Graduate Assistant -
                         (1 year contract - Compensation - tuition for 12 credits over duration of                                       contract, housing and $1000 RAM cash)
                      
Reports To:      Associate Dean of Residence Life

Position Purpose:
The Residence Life Graduate Assistant (GA) will serve as a critical member of the Residence Life team overseeing our on-campus apartment community and assisting with critical projects throughout the year. As the GA of Residence Life, this position will lead Resident Advisors, mentor students, mediate conflict, and provide educational programming to apartment residents.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
(70%) Oversight of the NCU Apartment Community
  • Lead NCU apartment students by providing educational, spiritual and social programming, conflict mediation, and assist with moving on and off campus.
  • Oversee Apartment RAs by leading in one-on-one mentoring, consistent staff meetings, and ongoing team development.
  • Share in RD on-duty phone coverage on a four week rotation throughout the year.
  • Participate in student conduct process – student meetings, Conduct Review, decision letters, eRezLife tracking, etc.
  • Participate in roommate conflict conversations
  • Meet bi-weekly with Associate Dean of Residence Life and/or Dean of Students for supervision

 (30%) Assist with Seasonal Projects
  • In conjunction with Resident Directors, lead the ideating and executing of August, January and Spring training for Residence Life Student Leaders
  • Assist with the spring housing season by working closely with the Housing Coordinator in hosting, leading, and mediating housing conversations and placing students in their fall housing.
  • Assist with student leader interviews, selection, and placement for upcoming summer and school year
  • Participating in housing and chapel committees as needed
  • Serve as the Summer RD overseeing a team of RAs for trainings, a weekly meeting and other events (e.g., new student orientation)
  • Serve as the Summer RD.  Duties for this role include hiring and training the team of Summer RAs, providing on-going support for Summer RAs by conducting weekly team meetings and bi-weekly one-on-one meetings, supporting summer residents through programming efforts and student conduct follow-up, assisting with designated times of student housing transitions at the beginning and end of the summer season, and participating in the RD on-duty on-call rotation.

Job Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree is required. All GAs must be enrolled in NCU Graduate level courses.

  • Residence Life knowledge and experience is preferred 
  • Ability to handle confidential information  
  • Ability to communicate and follow up verbally and in writing to ensure shared understanding of accurate information 
  • Ability to deal with conflict resolution in a professional manner 
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and conflicting priorities to accomplish tasks efficiently and accurately 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and independently 
  • Skill and ability to input data accurately and efficiently 
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, reach, and lift above the head  

Working Conditions and Frequency: 20 Hours/week

Equipment and Tools

Use of a PC and telephone, photocopier and facsimile machine approximately 50% of the workday

Environmental Conditions

Exposure to repetitive motion of the fingers, hands and wrists on a daily basis
Work is performed in a Christ-centered urban environment
